Pedestrian accidents - RMPIC

Pedestrians have just as much right to be outside and travel as vehicles on the road, and yet the
number of pedestrian accidents is on the rise. According to the Utah Department of Public Safety,
in 2016 a total of 1,006 pedestrians were struck by vehicles statewide that caused 898 injuries and
39 deaths. Injuries caused by pedestrian accidents are often severe given the lack of protection
that a person has when struck by a vehicle.

What Causes Pedestrian Accidents?

According to the Utah Department of Public Safety, there are many causes of pedestrian accidents.
Almost one-third of all accidents occur when a driver is turning and fails to see a pedestrian. Some
of the leading causes also include failure to yield the right of way, hit and run, distracted driving,
improper backing up, and speeding. The majority of pedestrian accidents happen in the afternoon
and evening hours, and nearly 40% of all pedestrian accidents occur in marked crosswalks. In 2016,
a majority 55% of pedestrian accident victims were found completely not at fault for their injuries.
Victims hurt in pedestrian accidents often suffer serious injuries, and the faster the vehicle is
driving the more devastating the injuries can be.

Pedestrian Accident Injuries

Because a pedestrian lacks any protection against a vehicle, the injuries suffered by victims is
often catastrophic. These injuries can result in a person being out of work for months or years
while they recover, and some injuries are so serious that they result in permanent disability.
Unfortunately, many pedestrians die every year from the devastating injuries caused by these
accidents, despite drivers’ obligation to look out for pedestrians and cede the right of way. Some of
the most common injuries seen in pedestrian accidents include:

Head trauma
Facial injuries
Traumatic brain injuries
Spinal cord injuries
Multiple bone fractures
Severe lacerations and road rash
Soft tissue damage
Amputation injuries and loss of limbs
Internal bleeding
Internal organ damage
Paralysis
Death

Many of these injuries require extensive medical treatment, including surgeries, medication,
medical devices, physical therapy, rehabilitation, and in some cases a lifetime of additional care. It
is critical that pedestrian accident victims get the compensation they deserve after an accident to
cover the costs of their injuries, now and in the future.
